Sun bears are the smallest of bears and among the most enjoyable animals to observe. The endangered sun bears, named for the golden crescent on their chest, often display their frolicsome nature. Extremely agile and often comical, sun bears are great tree climbers and make excellent use of their enclosure’s climbing structures. We are pleased that several cubs have been born here over the years! In the wild, sun bears are getting fewer and fewer, due mainly to habitat loss from farming and logging, poaching (both for meat and use in medicines), and the pet trade. San Diego Zoo Global collaborates with the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre in Borneo, which serves as a rescue and rehabilitation facility for orphaned and injured bears. We are excited about developing this partnership into a research opportunity that will aid in sun bear conservation and could lend insight into this bear’s biology.
