Xin Bao and Yun Chuan are here!

There are three ways to experience giant pandas at the San Diego Zoo.

Welcome to Panda Ridge

Enter the fascinating world of giant pandas at the San Diego Zoo’s Panda Ridge. The newly refreshed and expanded area takes inspiration from the breathtaking, lush landscapes in and around giant pandas’ native habitats in Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi provinces. You’ll be immersed in their diverse and dynamic landscapes while learning about the species’ conservation story.

A Global Movement

Giant pandas are cherished across the globe. From China to San Diego—and around the world—we’re celebrating a global movement and a new chapter as we safeguard the future for this iconic species. With you by our side, we’re honored to mark their return to the San Diego Zoo and share in this historic moment together, protecting them for generations to come.

Shepard Firey's 'Friendship Across the Earth' artwork

Bringing Us Together

We’re honored to commemorate this new beginning in giant panda conservation with artwork by world-renowned contemporary artist Shepard Fairey. The California-based artist is known for his unique style, including President Barack Obama’s iconic 'Hope' campaign poster. The newly unveiled portrait, titled 'Friendship Across the Earth,' features Bai Yun, the beloved panda that lived at the San Diego Zoo for over 20 years, along with themes of majesty, respect, and conservation. Fairey’s work ignites inspiration and connects us to what really matters—protecting the planet we all share.

The Future Is Black and White

Giant pandas are a keystone species. They’re inherently connected to the health of their delicately balanced ecosystems and the planet we all share. Together with our partners and wildlife allies like you, we’re working side by side to safeguard the future for this remarkable species and the bamboo forests they depend on.

Partnering for Pandas

For 30 years, we’ve had the honor of working alongside our conservation partners in China to make a difference for giant pandas. By uniting our strengths, we’re restoring flourishing populations and healthy ecosystems so giant pandas can thrive. In the exciting next step of our partnership, we’re working to improve overall health and resilience for populations vulnerable to extinction and loss of genetic diversity.
